Baby's head severed by doctor while operating on pregnant woman

A doctor allegedly severed the head of a baby from its body while operating a pregnant woman during delivery at Samsherganj Primary Health Centre in Murshidabad district on Friday. The woman, Malati Biwi lodged a complaint against the accused doctor Avijit Dasgupta and police started an investigation.

The family members of the woman alleged that the doctor put the severed head of the baby in a bag and handed it over to the family members of the woman.

The woman was then taken to Jangipur Sub Divisional Hospital and was admitted there in critical a condition. However, the hospital recommended the patient to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital late on Friday night for better treatment.

On being shifted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where she underwent a surgery, doctors found a baby with its head severed inside the woman.

"Avijit Dasgupta, the accused doctor gave us a bag in which the head was kept. We forget to bring the bag with us and left it in Samsherganj Primary Health Centre. We rushed to the hospital again after the doctors of Murshidabad Medical College informed us that my wife gave birth to a baby with severed head," said Jahangir Shekh, the husband of Malati.

"We found the bag in which the head was kept in Samsherganj Primary Health Centre," Shekh added. Murshidabad district administration was also informed about the incident.
According to sources, the cops have started an investigation. Though the accused doctor was not arrested till the time this report was filed, sources said that the probe might lead the cops to the doorsteps of the doctor soon and an impending arrest may soon follow.
