Baby dumped minutes after being born, rescued

Kolkata: A new born baby who was dumped on the road side in Dum Dum on Wednesday morning, was later rescued by an elderly couple in the locality.
According to local sources, the infant, who was given birth a few hours ago, was kept on a pile of sand on the road side. Chobi Majumdar, an elderly woman who was passing through the area along with her husband noticed the new born laying on the road side. She rescued the infant and took her to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Incident created a sensation in the area on Wednesday morning. Locals suspected that the new born was dumped in the area a few minutes before she was rescued by the couple. Majumdar couple was going to a hospital where their pregnant daughter had been undergoing treatment. The woman stepped up to the baby and picked her in her arms and rushed her to the hospital.
After being informed, the local police reached the spot and started a probe in this regard. According to the police, the infant is stated to be stable now. Police have started a probe to ascertain the identity of the baby or the whereabouts of her mother who dumped the infant on the street.
After rescuing the new born, the woman said her life could have been in a jeopardy had she been laid there for any longer. There were some dogs in the area but they did not harm the new born. After being instructed by the higher authorities, the local administration has decided to take the responsibilities of the infant, if her mother is not identified. The state government would take the responsibility for bringing up the baby. The locals also expressed their happiness after coming to know the decision taken by the district administration in this regard.
