Baby dies in mother's womb, kin alleges medical negligence
Family members of a woman who was admitted to Baruipur Super Specialty Hospital for delivery three days ago staged demonstration inside the hospital premises on Wednesday after the doctors announced that the baby had died in the womb.
The incident triggered tension in the area as the family members of the woman gheraoed the doctors and the staff members of the hospital since the morning.
The woman, Meera Rani Mondal, a resident of Pabtala village of Kultali in South 24 Parganas was taken to Jamtala primary health centre three days ago when she felt labour pain and she was shifted to the Baruipur hospital later. When she was transferred to the Baruipur hospital, the doctors there told her that the time for her delivery did not come yet. The patient had been kept for two days in the hospital. As her condition deteriorated, the doctors were called in. After seeing the patient, the doctors told the patient that baby had died in her womb. When the woman told this to her family members, they became infuriated and started agitating. The family members of the victim also threatened to lodge a complaint with the police in this connection. The victim's family members demanded strong action against the accused who were responsible for the incident.
The family members alleged that the hospital authorities did not take any steps for two days which led to the deterioration of her health. After being informed, the police reached the spot and tried to pacify the mob. The senior hospital officials also intervened to bring the situation under control. They talked to the family members and assured them that the matter would be looked into. The family members, however, alleged that there were serious lapses on the part of the doctors who were utterly indifferent while treating the patient. She was kept in the hospital as the doctors said that it was not the proper time for her delivery. But the same doctors did not bother to check her health for the next two days. It was learnt that the condition of woman was gradually improving.
A senior official of the hospital said that they had received a complaint in connection with an incident of medical negligence in which a baby died in mother's womb. It was a very serious allegation and a thorough probe would be conducted. The official did not want to comment on the incident before a probe is conducted.
