Ayurveda practitioners to receive govt training

Kolkata: Bengal government has decided to impart training among Ayurveda practitioners in the state so that they can prescribe certain allopathic drugs to the patients in a more effective manner.
Practitioners having Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degrees are eligible to take part in the training sessions which will be conducted in 10 medical colleges and hospitals in the state including the ones situated in the city. The training sessions will be carried out among the candidates through various batches at the Pharmacology department of these medical colleges from December 11. According to sources in the state, health department training programmes will be conducted throughout this month. There are 2,000 BAMS doctors in the state, out of which 1,260 have applied for the turning sessions which will be undertaken through batches.
The classes will start from 10 am and will continue up to 3 pm, depending on the availability of the pharmacology professors at the medical colleges. Around 50-60 candidates will be accommodated in each training session.
The state health department has taken the decision to conduct the training among the Ayurvedic doctors so that they can obtain better knowledge about certain drugs and their application. It may be mentioned that the state government has already given a go-ahead to the AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidhha and Homeopathy) practitioners to prescribe modern medicine. The AYUSH unit under the state health department permitted certain practitioners of the Indian system of medicine to practice modern medicine but with some restrictions. The Health department (AYUSH branch) also issued notifications declaring that the persons holding qualifications specified in the second schedule to the Indian Medicine Central Council Act, 1970 and duly registered under concerned state council, shall be entitled to practice modern medicine.
The Ayurveda practitioners have been allowed to prescribe certain medicines which include Antacid including H2 receptor blockers, Antimalarial (National Treatment Protection to be followed), anti-biotics, chemo therapeutics – Clotrimazole, Tetracycline, Azithromycine, Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, O.R.S, oral contraceptives, Vitamin A in oil, Iron Folic acid tablets and thirteen other medicines as may be included in the list by the state government.
The AYUSH practitioners will however, not be allowed to perform the procedure like medico legal cases, autopsy examinations, intravenous injections, surgical procedures other than pure Unani/Ayurveda and surgical procedures like Ksharsutra and blood transfusion.
Many of the Ayurveda practitioners have welcomed the state government's move of organising training sessions for their betterment in practising modern medicine.
