ASI killed in road accident

Kolkata: Sukhendu Sarkar (49), an Assistant Sub-Inspector of police who was currently posted at Jagacha police station in Howrah was killed in a road accident on Kona Expressway on Tuesday morning.
Police said that the victim was riding on his motorcycle along the Kona Expressway when a speeding truck hit him from behind. The victim's body was disfigured due to the heavy impact of the accident.
According to the police, Sarkar was going to the police station from his house to join his duty. A resident of Domjur in Howrah, the victim was currently discharging his duty at the traffic police department under the Jagacha police station. The local residents told the police that the accident occurred near Garfa crossing on the Kona Expressway when the speeding truck had smashed the victim. Eyewitnesses said that the truck was running at a top speed when the incident occurred. The driver had fled from the spot along with the vehicle immediately after the accident. The local people rushed to the spot after hearing about the incident. They informed the matter to the police and recovered the body of the victim from the spot. The traffic movement on the Kona Expressway was disrupted after the incident.
Later, the situation was brought under control following the police intervention. Traffic movement was resumed nearly after half an hour of the accident.
The body was sent for the post-mortem examination to the Howrah district hospital. Police are investigating if there is any other angle in the incident and they were waiting for the post-mortem report.
According to a senior police officer in the district, the victim was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The speeding truck crushed the victim
under its wheels after he fell from his bike. The circumstantial evidence suggests that the vehicle had hit the police officer from behind.
