ASI, 2 others arrested for abduction

Kolkata: An Assistant Sub Inspector of Kolkata police along with two persons were arrested for allegedly abducting a jewellery shop owner of Nadia and snatching jewellery and cash worth Rs 2.5 lakh approximately. Sleuths came to know after interrogating the ASI that another police personnel is also connected with the crime.

According to sources, on July 5, a person identified as Bablu Nath of Nadia lodged a FIR at the Muchipara police station stating that he was abducted by two persons in a SUV who claimed themselves to be policemen. He said they had taken Rs one lakh and gold jewellery weighing about 50 grams and left him near the airport on July 4.

During the interrogation, sleuths identified the SUV and its registration number from CCTV camera footage.

Later, on the basis of the SUV's registration number police managed to get hold of the driver identified as Nepal Dhar and the owner of the SUV. Dhar was arrested a few days ago.

During interrogation, he stated that a person identified as Ashish Chandra who works in the records section of Kolkata Police was involved in the case. Chandra was arrested on Tuesday night.

All three of them were produced before the Sealdah Court and were remanded to police custody till July 16.

Sources informed that Chandra stated that another police constable is also connected to the case.

They somehow came to know that Nath frequently comes to Sonapatti in Burrabazar for his trade. Sleuths are looking for the other accused police constable.

Chandra was arrested earlier in 2014 for his connection in a cheating case at Sealdah Government Railway Police (GRP). That time, he was suspended and a departmental inquiry was also initiated. As a result, he was suspended and also barred from salary increment.
