Asansol Mayor blames Babul Supriyo for inciting trouble, lodges complaint

Kolkata: Jitendra Tewari, Mayor, Asansol Municipal Corporation, has lodged a complaint against Babul Supriyo, Union Minister of State for Forest, for inciting BJP workers who had attacked policemen in Asansol on Friday.

The police arrested 10 BJP workers on Saturday who had pelted stones at the cops and even threw bombs.

On Friday, the BJP workers had held a programme to submit a memorandum to the Mayor demanding improvement in civic amenities. Sensing trouble, the police put up barricades and told the leaders that only a delegation will be allowed to submit the memorandum. Infuriated over the decision of the police, party workers hurled brickbats at them injuring six of them. They hurled bombs too. The police conducted raids at different places and arrested 10 persons on Saturday morning.

Jitendra Tewari alleged that the main person behind Friday's trouble is Babul Supriyo who had incited the party workers to create trouble in the area. Tewari has lodged a complaint against him on Saturday morning. On Saturday, a scuffle broke out between BJP supporters and the police when the latter prevented them from entering the office of Gobardanga Municipality. The BJP workers had gathered there to submit a memorandum demanding action against some councillors who had allegedly taken cut money from the residents. BJP workers tried to break the barricades and pelted stones. The police resorted to lathi-charge and then burst tear gas shells to control the mob. Six policemen were injured in the incident. They were taken to the hospital where they have received treated. Police pickets have been posted in the area to maintain peace.
