As Kolkata awaits final World Cup date, PWD goes extra mile to make it a grand success

Kolkata: With just a few days left for the final match of the FIFA Under-17 Football World Cup, the state government is leaving no stone unturned to make the international event successful by ensuring all facilities are in place on that particular day.
According to sources in the state Secretariat, there will be a high-level meeting with FIFA and state government authorities at Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan on Tuesday in this connection.
The state Public Works Department (PWD) has already achieved the impossible by renovating the stadium to a "world class one" within a very short span of time. It is learnt that senior officers of the state PWD will be present in the meeting.
The PWD has posted 30 junior engineers at the stadium since the tournament has begun to oversee the maintenance work that need to be carried out on regular basis after every match.
It may be mentioned that the council meeting of FIFA's executive committee is going to be held on October 26, 27 and 28 respectively in Kolkata in which more than 300 FIFA delegates from its headquarters in Zurich are paying a visit. They will also be present at the stadium to watch the final match. Hence, steps will be taken to carry out certain works that need to be done following discussions with the FIFA authorities.
There are also possibilities of discussions on the procedures that need to be taken for maintenance of the world class stadium after the tournament is over.
According to an official of the state PWD, it would be an uphill task to maintain the infrastructure that has been developed in the stadium for the World Cup and so advice of the FIFA authorities may be sought regarding the same. It may be mentioned that a day ahead of the final match, FIFA has organised a get-together at Eco Island inside Eco Park.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will also be present there. The state government has arranged a cultural programme for the FIFA authorities at Eco Island during the get-together that will start at around 7 pm.
Percussionist Bikram Ghosh, vocalist Rashid Khan and Odissi dancer Dona Ganguly will be performing at the event that will be of around 45 minutes.
