Armed lunatic sparks chaos in Alambazar

Kolkata: A person armed with a sword created panic among the residents of a slum in Alambazar on Tuesday night as he suddenly launched an attack. As many as six persons were injured and one of them, whose condition is stated to be serious, has been admitted at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. The Baranagar police station has managed to arrest the accused who has been identified as Suraj alias Tarzan. The police informed that the person is somewhat mentally challenged and has been sent to Pavlov Mental Hospital in Park Circus area for treatment. According to police sources, the person, at around 9 pm on Tuesday, came rushing from somewhere and armed with a sword, marched under the Nivedita Setu which is a secluded place. There, he attacked some persons in the adjacent slum. "We were taken aback as we found no reasons for the attack. He was shouting Joy Ma and indiscriminately slashed around the sword in his hand," a local resident said. Police rushed to the spot as soon as they were informed of the bizarre incident, but the accused managed to flee. He was later arrested from the nearby Ambedkar Colony area. It may be mentioned that the accused had criminal antecedents, but is recently suffering from a degree of mental imbalance. Blood stains were found from the spot where the attack took place. "We have initiated a case under attempt to murder, section 307 of Indian Penal Code against the accused," a senior official of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate said.
