Angioplasty gone wrong: Woman bleeds to death in SSKM

Kolkata: A middle-aged woman from North Dinajpur's Kaliagunge died at SSKM Hospital on Thursday due to excessive bleeding that might have been caused during the angioplasty done on the patient.
The family members of the victim said that the woman - Namita Banik had brought her husband to SSKM Hospital a few days ago as he was complaining of some ailments. After consulting the doctors, she was about to take her husband back home when she decided to consult a cardiologist as she suffered from chest pain quite often.
She visited the outpatient department of cardiology a few days ago. She was told that an angioplasty would be performed on her.
As decided, the doctors performed her angioplasty at the hospital. It was alleged by her family members that while conducting the procedure, the victim had ruptures in an artery. As a result of this, the victim was continuously bleeding from her artery since her angioplasty.
The doctors at the hospital tried to repair the rupture but failed to do so. As a result, infection spread all over her body and her condition started deteriorating. She was put in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. Her family members said on Thursday that the patient has died.
The family members of the victim lodged a complaint with the principal of the hospital. They also alleged that the specialist doctor, under whom she was admitted, did not carry out the angioplasty. Some junior doctors had carried out the angioplasty of the patient.
The victim's family members may also lodge a complaint with the police against the doctor.
