Aliah Univ professor arrested over wife's death
Kolkata: A professor of Aliah University was arrested on charges of abetment of suicide and torture of his wife. Iqbal Ali, an assistant professor of the university was arrested on Saturday on the basis of a complaint of the woman's family members.
Tania Agni, the 27-year-old housewife who had sustained serious burn injuries at her residence in Battala, Rajarhat on Thursday night died at a private hospital on EM Bypass on the wee hours of Saturday. Her in-laws had claimed that Tania had attempted to commit suicide, however, her family members alleged murder.
"It was a pre-planned murder. Her husband and in-laws would torture her for dowry," Tania's father Sattar Gazi said who further alleged that Ali was also involved in an extra marital affair.
Tania, an MA from Presidency University wanted to become a teacher after completing her PhD. "They would not allow her to continue her studies and tortured her mentally and physically too," Sattar said demanding exemplary punishment of her daughter's husband.
Earlier, Tania's in-laws used to live at Topsia area and had shifted to Rajarhat six months back.
Tania's husband Iqbal Ali, however, had denied his or his family's involvement in the incident. "She was of a suspicious nature and would complain that I was involved in extramarital affair. She attempted to commit suicide in the bathroom," he said on Friday.
The police are conducting searches to question some of Tania's in-laws who are presently absconding.
