Ace paddler Soumyajit Ghosh booked for rape

Kolkata: Arjuna award winning table tennis player Soumyajit Ghosh has been accused of raping an 18-year-old girl who lodged a complaint against him at Barasat Women police station.
The complainant claimed that Ghosh started dating her ever since they met over a social networking site three years ago.
She also told the police that they used to meet each other at his flat in Kolkata and Siliguri. Ghosh had promised to marry her after she turned 18, she alleged.
The victim on Thursday had given her statements before a judicial magistrate at Barasat district court.
Her family members also said they would like to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and seek justice for the teenager. Ghosh's family earlier used to stay in Bihar and started living at Barasat few years ago.
In her complaint, the victim mentioned that she was forced to undergo abortion at his Bagha Jatin flat. She told the police that the Olympian had raped her several times over the past three years on the pretext of marriage.
Bengal-based table tennis player Ghosh has been booked under various charges including rape, criminal conspiracy, causing miscarriage without the woman's consent and cheating, a police officer said. During interrogation, Ghosh also told the police that he had received properties from her family with false promise of marriage.
The girl in her complaint also said that they used to meet when her parents were away from home and also at Ghosh's residence in Siliguri.
She decided to lodge the complaint as the accused recently started avoiding her and allegedly snapped all ties with her in the social networking site. As she became pregnant, she was forced to undergo an abortion. Ghosh who is currently touring abroad could not be contacted for a comment.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Barasat, Abhijit Banerjee said a complaint has been received against the paddler and an investigation has been initiated on the basis of it."
