Abandoned girl celebrates birthday with hospital staff

Kolkata: Kolkata Medical College and Hospital on Saturday celebrated the birthday of a two-year-old abandoned girl, who battled a rare type of tumour.

Hospital authorities are looking for someone who can adopt the child through formal procedure prescribed by the government.

Meenu, name given by hospital authorities to the girl, was abandoned by her parents at the hospital after they came to know that her child was born with the tumor in 2017.

Since then the hospital authorities have been taking care of the baby. "We are celebrating Meenu's second birthday today (November 23, 2019). She was actually born on October 23 but at that time most of the hospital staff were on Puja vacation. Today, only one nurse is absent in our department. The birthday is being celebrated with support of Medical superintendent and vice-principal of Kolkata Medical College and Hospital Dr Indranil Biswas, head of the department of medical oncology Dr Shibashish Bhattacharyya, and head of the department of paediatric surgery Dr Sukanta Kumar Das," said Dr Ajay Kumar Das, RMO-Cum Clinical Tutor, paediatric surgery department.

While, a team of doctors from department of paediatric surgery and department of medical oncology joined hands to treat the child, a tumor board was also formed. The baby is now free of the disease. She will be under observation for another three years.

The baby is doing well. She is familiar with all the staff of the hospital. The nurses and other hospital staff are taking care of her and giving her full attention.

"We are also looking for someone who can adopt the child through formal procedure prescribed by the government so that the child can get love and affection of father and mother," said Dr Ajay.
