8 hurt in bus-tram collision on M G Road

Kolkata: Eight persons were injured after a bus collided with a tram on M G Road near Strand Road crossing on Friday morning.

Police rushed the injured persons to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. The injured persons were discharged after they were treated at the hospital.

According to the police, on Friday, around 8:30 am, a tram was moving towards Howrah from Bidhannagar.

When the tram reached near the Strand Road crossing, a private bus from route number 39A/2 was moving towards Sealdah. While taking a left turn on M G Road, the bus collided with the tram.

It is alleged the bus was moving at a high speed and thus the driver failed to control the vehicle while taking the turn.

As soon as the collision took place, six passengers of the bus fell down from their seats.

The tram driver and conductor fell down inside the tram and suffered minor injuries.

The on-duty traffic police personnel of Howrah Bridge traffic guard ran to the spot and evacuated the passengers from the vehicles. Injured passengers along with tram driver and conductor were admitted to the hospital.

The driver of the bus fled the spot to evade arrest. Later, the police seized the bus and sent it to Burrabazar police station. A case has been initiated against the bus driver.
