70-yr-old woman dead, husband injured after fire in flat

Kolkata: A 70-year-old woman died and her husband was seriously injured after a fire broke out in their flat at Garfa on Friday late night. After hearing their cries, neighbours rushed inside the flat and shifted both the injured to MR Bangur Hospital.

According to the locals, at around 2 am on Friday night they heard screams from the flat at Purbanchal's Om Apartment in Garfa. Some of them rushed there and found the collapsible gate was opened and the door was unlocked. As smoke was coming out of the flat, they could not enter.

After a while, some of them went inside and found Samir

Roy Choudhury, owner of the flat, lying on the bed in half-burnt condition. He pointed towards the washroom where his wife Renuka was found lying on the floor with burn injuries.

Immediately, Garfa police station was informed and both Samir and Renuka were rushed to the hospital, where Renuka was declared dead. Samir was admitted to the burn unit.

As he was asleep, he could not identify the cause of the fire.

Locals informed that Roy Choudhury's only son Subhojit stays in Pune. For the past few months, the relation has been bitter between the aged couple.

Also, both of them were suffering from age-related illness. Till Saturday night, investigators are not sure whether this is a case of accident or suicide.

The police are investigating the murder aspect as the main door and collapsible gate was not locked.
