58-yr-old jumps in front of Metro rake at Rabindra Sarobar Stn

Kolkata: A 58-year-old man jumped in front of a Kavi Subhas bound Metro rake at Rabindra Sarobar Metro station on Thursday morning. The rake ran him over, despite the motorman applying emergency brake.

According to sources, the man who was later identified as Joydip Chakraborty, was seen waiting for the train at around 7:40 am. At 7:45 am, when the train was approaching the Down platform, he reportedly jumped in front of the rake. The rake stopped after four of its compartments went over his body.

Immediately, a power block was initiated and both Kavi Subhas and Dum Dum bound Metro services were suspended. Soon, Metro Railway staff and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel found that Chakraborty's body had got stuck between the wheels. They recovered the body a few minutes later.

As a result of the disruption, commuters had to face immense trouble. Normal Metro services resumed from 8:15 am.

Earlier on September 9, two persons had jumped in front of Metro rakes, out of which one was saved.

Sources informed that the tendency of people to commit suicide by jumping in front of Metro rakes is increasing day by day. Metro officials claimed that despite their awareness campaign and other steps, the situation has not changed.
