50-year-old man commits suicide after losing cricket bet

Kolkata: Depressed over losing a huge amount of money in cricket betting, a 50-year-old man committed suicide by throwing himself before a running train near Garifa station in Naihati on Tuesday morning.
The victim has been identified as Pradip Dey (50) who was a resident of Ramnagar area under Naihati police station. Dey jumped before Up Naihati Bandel local near the Garifa station.
According to preliminary investigation, police suspect that the victim had picked a bad habit of betting a few years ago. He had lost money in betting earlier also. It was learnt that he had put a huge amount of money in an ongoing cricket tournament.
Police also said he had sold off some jewelleries and spent money on betting and suffered losses for repeated times.
Police also suspect that the victim apparently went through mental trauma as he was unable to explain the financial losses he had suffered. It was not yet clear if he put his money in cricket betting or other forms of betting like satta or game of cards.
Cops said the victim used to stay with his wife and daughter at his residence. His wife Bela Dey works as a cook and their daughter studies in class X. Police came to know from the family members that Dey put a huge amount of money in cricket betting.
He had been under tremendous as he was suffering from mental depression after he lost the money. The victim borrowed that money and money lenders were also mounting pressure on the victim which had left him completely shattered.
The railway police later recovered the body and sent it for postmortem. Police have started a detailed probe into the incident.
