Kolkata: A five-year -old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by a middle aged person at Narendrapur in South 24 Parganas a week ago and the body was in a bushy area. The accused was arrested on Saturday and the body was recovered later.

According to sources, on July 15, victim's family members who are residents of Kheyadah in Narendrapur could not found their daughter for more than two hours in the morning. After searching for her till evening the tribal couple went to Narendrapur police station and sought immediate action. They also stated that from their neighbours they came to know that the girl was seen with a person identified as Azgar Ali, who is also a resident of the same area. After a missing diary was lodged and victim's parents doubted Ali was their daughter's kidnapper.

Following the complaint lodged sleuths raided Ali's house and found that he was not home. Thus the doubt grew more. During a check with the database, police found that Ali was arrested two years ago in a snatching case. At that time he was arrested from Park Circus railway station after a few days of search.

Despite repeated searches, police failed to trace Ali and locals got furious. One day they even put up a road blockade protesting the police inaction. A few days ago sleuths decided to initiate strict vigil in and around the Sealdah South Section railway stations. On Saturday evening, police got a source information that Ali was seen in Sealdah railway station.

Without wasting any time, police rushed to Sealdah railway station and arrested Ali. Later Ali shown the police personnel where he dumped the child's body. During interrogation, Ali confessed that he lured the child by promising to give a guava and took her to a bushy area. There he raped the child and strangled her to death.

Ali was produced before the Baruipur Court on Sunday and was remanded to judicial custody for one day as he needs to be produced before the Special Judge, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which remains closed on Sundays.
