5 pirates held; rifles, crude bombs seized

Kolkata: Baruipur police have arrested five Bangladeshi pirates for illegally entering into the Indian territory. Six rifles, seven rounds of bullets and a few crude bombs were seized from their possession.
A team of the district police along with special operation group having knowledge in such crimes carried out the raids in the wee hours on Saturday. The joint forces raided a forest area at Kaikhali region of South 24-Parganas and arrested the Bangladeshi pirates who were hiding there.
According to the cops, the accused were all residents of Satkhira and Khulna districts. According to preliminary investigation, police suspect that they entered the country's territory with a motive to rob the tourists visiting the Sunderbans. A senior police officer of Baruipur said the accused had an intention to loot the tourists and the locals. The accused are being interrogated in this connection and a detailed probe has been initiated in this connection so far. They are also investigating if the incident had any connection with an earlier one when there was a gunbattle between the pirates and the cops three weeks ago.
