5 killed, 2 critically injured in separate accidents in state

Five persons were killed in three separate road accidents in the state while two persons received serious injuries in another accident.

In the first incident, a biker and a cyclist died after an oil tanker hit them one after the other at Sahudangi area of Siliguri on Wednesday morning. Both the victims were taken to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, where they were declared, brought dead by the doctors.

The accident caused huge traffic jam in the area since morning. Police said that the oil tanker was running at a top speed when it lost its control and hit the biker and the cyclist. The local people managed to catch hold of the accused and later handed over him to the police.

In another incident, a schoolgirl was killed after being hit by a tractor at Suri in Birbhum this morning. The incident triggered tension in the area. The victim Chandrima Dutta, a student of Class VII from a local school was riding on her bicycle to school when the tractor lost control and hit her. Local residents rushed the victim to a nearby hospital where the victim was declared brought dead.

Agitated local people put up a roadblock on National Highway-60 protesting against the rash driving of vehicles in the area resulting in accidents. When the police reached the spot, the local residents staged a demonstration. A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

In yet another accident, the driver and the helper of a vehicle carrying milk died after their vehicle rammed into a truck from behind. The incident took place at Nandapur area of Mejia in Bankura. Police said that the truck was stationed on National Highway 60 at Nandapur when the milk van hit it from behind.

The frontal portion of the milk van was completely damaged in the accident. After being informed, the police reached the spot and rescued the injured victims. They were rushed to Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital where the victims were pronounced brought dead.

Meanwhile, two bikers were injured when they hit a car from behind on the Shyampur Road in Howrah's Uluberia at around 10 am on Wednesday. The bikers were not wearing helmets. The injured were taken to Uluberia Hospital for treatment.
