5 held for TMC activist's death

Kolkata: Police have arrested three persons from various parts of Burdwan in connection with the mysterious death of Trinamool Congress activist Purnendu Chatterjee,.

His body was recovered from Srerampore on Wednesday morning after he went missing on Tuesday evening.

The district Trinamool Congress leaders have alleged that all the arrested persons are BJP activists. The accused reportedly admitted during the interrogation that they were attached to the BJP.

They also claimed that they have been framed.The victim went missing after some local residents stormed into his house and heckled his family members.

They alleged that the victim had misappropriated some government funds.

The villagers demanded the money back from his family members.

The villagers alleged that the victim had taken Rs 30,000 as 'cut money' from a fund which was generated for a government scheme.

The family members of the victim alleged that BJP-backed goons could be behind the incident and they a lodged an FIR at the local police station.

The district BJP leaders however denied the allegations brought against them by the ruling party in the state.

Police are interrogating the arrested persons in this connection.

The investigating officers are yet to ascertain the exact reason that led to the murder.
