45-year-old found dead in rented flat in Dum Dum

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a 45-year-old man whose body was found inside his rented house on RN Thakur Road at Bediapara in Dum Dum on Tuesday morning.
Police said the victim, Somenath Sarkar rented the room of a house a few months ago introducing himself as a freelance photographer. The owner of the house repeatedly asked for his identity card but the victim had never produced it before them. He used to stay in a room situated on the ground floor of the building.
Locals felt a foul smell coming out from the house from Monday. Initially, they thought that carcass of any animal might have caused the foul smell. However, on Tuesday morning, some of the locals opened a window and found out the decomposed body of the victim lying on the floor. They immediately reported the matter to the police who broke open the door and sent the body for the postmortem examination.
The investigators are yet to ascertain if it was a case of suicide or there was any foul play behind his death. According to police, there were some injury marks on his body.
Locals told the police that the victim rented a room around 8-9 months ago and hardly had interaction with his neighbours. The victim used to stay with his parents near 30A Bus stand around 12 years ago. After the death of his parents, he sold the house. Police are investigating if he had been suffering from ailments and have started a detailed probe in this regard.
