Kolkata: A 4-year-old girl was shot dead by a person, who is suspected to be the boyfriend of the victim's grandmother.
The incident took place at Hanskhali in Nadia district on Tuesday night.
According to police, the victim, Ishita Poddar was asleep in her bed at around 10 pm when the accused, Jatin Roy shot her. The victim was rushed to a nearby health centre where the doctors pronounced brought dead.
The incident triggered tension in the area since Tuesday night.
Police have already arrested the accused. The motive of the incident is yet to be ascertained by the police.
Locals told the police that Roy had an affair with Charubala Poddar, the victim's grandmother.
Police are investigating as to how did Roy received the arms.
Police came to know in the interrogation that Roy used to visit Poddar's house everyday. Like other days, Roy came to the house at around 10 pm on Thursday.
Locals also told police that they heard the gun fire and rushed to the spot only to find the victim girl lying in a pool of blood.
Roy fled the spot immediately after the incident.
Locals rescued the victim and rushed her to the hospital. The victim received a bullet in her head. The investigators are confused as to why the accused killed the minor girl.
Police are investigating all possible angles into the incident. The victim's grandmother and other family members are being interrogated in this connection so far. They are also interrogating the accused who was later arrested.
Locals on Wednesday morning staged a protest demonstration in the area and they demanded that a stern action against Roy, who has committed a heinous crime.
The victim's body has been sent for an autopsy.
