Kolkata: Two persons including a woman were killed in a road accident at Belgharia on BT Road in the wee hours on Monday. Two other road accidents were also reported one from Kasba area and another from Howrah in which an elderly lady and a male person were killed.
The accident infront of Belgharia police station occurred at around 4 am when the app based cab with two female passengers on board was headed towards the city from Agarpara.
The deceased have been identified as Tumpa Das (22) and the cab driver Mohammad Farhan. Tumpa's co passenger Jhilik Dutta sustained serious injuries.
According to police sources, the cab they were travelling in lost control and rammed into a loaded truck that was standing by the side of the road. Both the driver and Tumpa were seated in front seat while Jhilik was on the rear seat.
The three were rushed to Sagar Dutta Medical College Hospital at Kamarhati where the driver and Tumpa were declared brought dead. Both the passengers in the car are residents of Phoolbagan in east Kolkata.
The car was completely mangled due to the impact of the accident. The three were trapped inside the vehicle and police somehow managed to bring them out with much difficulty and take them to the hospital.
Locals alleged that a large number of vehicles including trucks are parked by the roadside during the night right in front of the police station that narrows down the road space.
The impounded vehicle by the police station in wake of investigation of various cases also contributes to encroachment of the road space. "Vehicles usually travel at top speed on BT Road particularly during the night and early morning when there is less traffic. Whenever a vehicle tries to overtake another, accidents take place due to less road space during the night," Asim Dutta, a local resident said.
The second accident was reported from P Majumder Road under Kasba police station area at around 8.15 am. A private car dashed one Gouri Rani Sarkar (71) while she was crossing the road. The lady was rushed to a private hospital at Kasba – EM Bypass connector where she was declared brought dead.
