4 held for assault of officers in Tollygunge police station

Kolkata: Four persons, including two women, were arrested late on Monday night and on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting police personnel inside Tollygunge police station on Sunday night.

Several more have been detained in connection with the case.

According to sources, after the incident came to light, Commissioner of Police (CP), Kolkata, Anuj Sharma ordered immediate action and sought a report on the incident.

Also, the officer-in-charge of Tollygunge police station, Anup Ghosh, has been show caused as he failed to bring the law and order situation under control and apprise his

superiors about the situation.

Sharma also questioned why the case was registered after almost 11 hours of the incident.

As soon as Sharma ordered for police action, officers started identifying and nabbing accused persons.

At first, CCTV footage was scrutinised and a few of the accused persons were identified. Late on Monday night, the anti-rowdy squad of Kolkata Police gathered information about the identified persons and conducted raids at a slum in Chetla. During raid, two youths, who were seen in the CCTV footage and identified as Dipak Adhikary and Chotka Dolui were arrested.

They were produced at the Alipore Court and have been remanded to police custody till August 17. On Tuesday, two women, identified as Purnima Das and Putul Naskar, have been arrested. Police sources informed that this duo had past criminal records.

On Sunday night, police officers were on naka-checking duty in front of Menoka cinema. Around 11pm, the police intercepted a biker and found that he was driving in drunken state.

Police tested the alcohol level of the accused, Ranajoy, using a breath analyzer machine and took him to Tollygunge police station.

After being taken to the police station, Ranajoy called some of his friends and claimed that police were harassing him without any reason.

Soon, more than 100 people gathered outside of Tollygunge police station and started agitating. Despite repeated requests by the police, the crowd refused to leave the spot. After a few minutes, the furious mob rushed into the police station and demanded Ranajoy's release. According to a source, to bring the situation under control, Ranajoy was released after police imposed a fine on him. But, this did not help much. The mob started pushing police personnel inside the police station. When some of the police personnel tried resisting the move, a few people from the mob assaulted several police personnel.

A constable and an officer were assaulted. They even tried to tear the uniform of a policeman. While, the police were getting assaulted a few of the accused persons went to the chamber of Officer in Charge's (OC) room and verbally abused him.

It was also alleged that a lady police personnel, who was trying control the women, was assaulted. Around 1:30 am, a huge contingent of police went to Tollygunge police station and brought the situation under control. a suo moto case was initiated on Monday after almost 11 hours of the attack.
