30-year-old woman found murdered near her house

Tension ran high at Lakurdi village, off National Highway-2, in East Burdwan district when a 30-year-old woman's body was found on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Mumtaj Biwi who was a local resident.

Police learnt that the woman got a call on Thursday evening and had gone away from her house and she was missing since. Later, some neighbours found her body lying in a place which is barely 500 metre away from her residence.

"We found the body lying in a pool of blood on the roadside and called up police without wasting any time. Cops from Burdwan police station reached the spot within a few minutes," said a neighbour.

The mother-in-law of Mumtaj alleged that the woman had an illegal relationship with a man who regularly called her up to come outside the house. "The man threatened her to kill if she would not give money to him," the mother-in-law further alleged.

The investigators found that the woman was stabbed with a knife. "The nature of wound suggested that it was a thrust of a pointed sharp weapon, which we suspected to be a knife. The weapon was probably taken away by the assailant," said an investigator.

Police recovered the mobile phone of Mumtaj Biwi. "We got the call list from the mobile phone and got some vital clues from there. But it is premature to say anything about the investigation now," the investigator added.

In another incident, a body of a youth, whose age would be around 20 years, was recovered from a pond at Purulia's Barabazar on Thursday night. The youth was murdered and his body was probably thrown in the pond. Police said an investigation was initiated to ascertain the identity of the deceased. But how the incident took place and what was the reason are unclear.
