3-yr-old transfused with blood from wrong group

Kolkata: A three-year-old boy suffering from thalassemia was allegedly transfused with blood from a group other than his own at Katwa Sub-Divisional Hospital in east Burdwan on Tuesday.

It is alleged that the person who examined his blood had made the mistake.

According to sources, on Tuesday afternoon, the child was brought to the hospital as he was unwell. After checking, doctors advised a blood transfusion at the earliest.

Immediately the child's father went to the blood bank of the hospital with his son. There was a laboratory technician who had collected the blood sample to determine the blood group which is mandatory before providing blood. As it is a normal practice the child's father did not notice the details. As soon as he got the packet of blood, he went to the hospital and admitted his son for transfusion.

He also handed over the blood to the nurse. After the blood transfusion commenced, the child's father noticed that the blood provided from the blood bank is A+ve (positive). But his son's blood group was O+ve. Immediately he informed the nurses and doctors.

After hearing the details, doctors went to the blood bank and asked for the report. Later as per the claim of the patient's father, again blood group test was done using the same blood sample which resulted in O+ve blood.
