3 riding without helmets dead in road mishap

Kolkata: Three youth who were riding on a motorcycle without wearing helmets were killed in a road accident.
The incident took place Dohral area of North Dinajpur on early Sunday morning. The incident not only triggered tension in the area but also led to massive traffic jam in the locality. Police said that the deceased were Sanatan Mondal (17), Amit Tarafdar (27) and Indra Mondal (23).
All of them were in an inebriated state when the accident took place.
It was learnt that all of them were residents of Kushmundi area of North Dinajpur. They left their respective houses on Sunday evening.
The local residents told the police that they were riding the motorcycle at top speed when they lost control and hit a roadside electric pole.
All three received severe injuries on their heads as none of them were wearing helmets. The local residents rushed them to the Itahar primary health centre where the doctors pronounced them brought dead.
The motorcycle which was badly damaged in the incident was later seized by the police. The bodies were sent for the post-mortem.
The incident led to traffic jam in the area. Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
The local residents alleged that police failed crack down on the helmetless bikers who were often found to plying through the area.
Despite the "Safe Drive, Save life" campaign initiated by the state government to check the road accidents, police fail to take enough drives to impose fines on those found to be flouting the traffic norms. Due to lack of surveillance, people often flout traffic norms and bikers ride motorcycles without helmets.
