3 members of family charred to death in Malda

Kolkata: Three members of a family were charred to death inside their house in Habibpur area of Malda.
Among the victims, there were an elderly woman, her daughter-in-law and her grandson. They are Sreemati Das (72), Nirupa Das (24) and Nirupa's two-and-half-year old son Arnab. According to preliminary investigation, police suspect that Nirupa killed her son and committed suicide by setting themselves on fire.
The elderly woman who was staying inside the adjacent room also had a similar fate. Police said she also committed suicide by setting herself on fire after seeing the incident.
Nirupa was married to Sankar Das, a resident of Buritala area under the Habibpur police station, four years ago. Locals have told the police that Nirupa had often engaged in quarrel with her mother-in-law over various family related issues. There were some financial constrains in the family. Sankar, the only bread earner of the family is a hawker. He was not at home when the incident took place.
The incident triggered tension among locals in the village. They spotted smoke billowing out of the house on late Monday night and rushed to the spot.
The elderly woman was lying on the floor of a room while the charred bodies of the other two were in an adjacent room. Locals reported the matter to the local police. Police rescued the victim and rushed them to a nearby hospital. The victims were declared dead by the doctors.
Police have started a detailed probe into the incident. They are investigating if there is any other angle to the incident. Police have collected samples from the place of the incident. Bodies have been sent for the postmortem examination.
