3 including Nigerian national arrested for cheating

Kolkata: Three persons, including a Nigerian national from Delhi, were arrested in connection with two separate cheating cases.

In both the incidents, accused persons got in touch with the victims through social media.

According to police, on June 3, a man from Bangur in Lake Town area lodged a complaint at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime police station alleging that he has been duped by a Facebook friend.

According to the complaint, the victim accepted the friendship request of a foreign national in May this year. The man claimed he was a marine engineer. After a few days of interaction, accused person wanted to send the victim a gift and demanded some money for tax and customs expenses. In phases, the victim paid Rs 3.5 lakh. In this case, two Nigerian nationals were arrested earlier. During the investigation names of two persons cropped up who were residents of Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.

On Tuesday, the duo were arrested from Delhi and brought to Kolkata in transit remand. They were produced before the Bidhannagar Court on Friday and have been remanded to judicial custody.

In another case, a Nigerian national was arrested from West Delhi on Monday. In this case, the modus operandi was same. Victim got in touch with a person on Facebook who claimed himself as the project manager of Mercedes Benz in UK.

The accused person identified as Chiemelie David Okeke, a Nigerian national,wanted to gift something to the victim and demanded money for customs duty and other charges. In phases the victim paid Rs 9.26 lakh.
