3 held with gold worth Rs 83 lakh

Kolkata: Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police has nabbed three persons with gold bars worth Rs 83 lakh near Aurobinda Setu on Monday afternoon. Accused persons stated that they smuggled the gold bars from Bangladesh.

On Monday morning, a police source informed STF personnel that a few persons with good quantity of gold had arrived in the city.

Working on the information police came to know that the suspects would meet a person and the gold will be delivered through Ultadanga Main Road.

Around 1 pm, a team from STF spotted three suspects near Aurobinda Setu. Immediately they were surrounded by STF personnel.

The police found gold bars inside a bag which one of the accused persons were carrying.

Later, the trio was taken to Maniktala police station and again the bag was checked. During the search, police found 18 gold bars weighing about 2.1 kg worth Rs 83 lakh.

Around Rs 10 lakh in Banladeshi currency was found from them. As they failed to provide any documents and render any satisfactory answers for having the gold bars and the Bangladeshi currency, the trio was arrested.

Two accused persons admitted that they had brought the gold bars from Bangladesh.

Earlier on Saturday ,STF had nabbed a Bangladeshi national from the city and recovered gold bars weighing around 583 grams from his possession.

The police came to know that the accused intended to hand over the gold bars in Burrabazar area.
