3 held with gold bars worth Rs 1 cr

Kolkata: Three persons were arrested at the Jorasanko police station on Thursday for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars worth more than Rs one crore.

According to sources, on Thursday, the police got a tip -off that a few persons will come to Burrabazar area with huge quantity of gold. Based on the secret information, police started keeping a tab in Burrabazar area.

In the afternoon, the police identified three persons and detained them.

The trio was taken to Jorasanko police station and their bags were searched. During the search, the police found three gold bars and a lot of cash. Following the evaluation, it was found that the gold was valued worth Rs 1.14 crore approximately. The money was also counted and it was found that they were carrying Rs 1.35 lakh with them. Gold and cash were seized.

During the investigation, the police suspect that the gold was smuggled from Bangladesh. The trio had come from Rajasthan and Mumbai to receive the gold from Kolkata. Police are trying to know whether the arrested persons are connected with any hawala group. Recently, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had arrested four persons from Salt Lake and seized gold worth Rs 2.53 crore.
