3-day fair to spread awareness on consumer rights

Kolkata: The Consumer Affairs department of the Bengal government will be organising their annual Kreta Suraksha Mela (Consumer Protection Fair) from February 24 to 26. The three-day fair which will be held at the Netaji Indoor Stadium from 2pm to 9pm, has been extended for another day unlike last year.

The fair aims to create awareness among the consumers for many of whom the 'Consumer Protection Act' is still a myth. The fair which was a two-day affair last year, witnessed hundreds of people who gathered around stalls to know about the Act.

Last year, many consumers had also complained about how they had been cheated by several companies and due to their lack of knowledge about the system of consumer disputes redressal, they had been duped of their money.

While addressing the seminar, Mayor Firhad Hakim had said there was a need to strengthen the consumer protection movement because if the consumers are aware of their rights then the companies cannot take them for a ride.

Minister for Consumer Affairs department Sadhan Pandey had also said that most of the people alleged how

they are being duped by

builders. In many cases, they have not received their flats though they have paid the money. The department takes prompt action in such cases, he had maintained.

The Consumer Affairs department had also set up stalls at the annual Kolkata Book Fair this year, held at the Central Park grounds, to spread awareness among the consumers.
