3 arrested after housewife immolates self in New Town

Kolkata: Three persons were arrested in connection with the incident in which a woman immolated herself after failing to bear the alleged torture of her in-laws.
The incident took place at New Town and the accused were arrested on Wednesday morning.
A police officer said that on the basis of the complaint lodged with them they arrested the victim's husband Biswajit Roy and two members of his family.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim Bithi got married to Biswajit seven months ago.
The situation started turning worse soon after a week of their marriage when her husband and in-laws started putting pressure on the woman to bring money and valuables from her parents.
Initially her parents had given as much as possible for them.
Later, the woman too was not in a position to approach her parents for more money and she used to bear the torture by keeping quiet.
On Tuesday, she faced the same torture from her husband and in-laws and set herself on fire when there was no one in the house.
She went inside a room and set herself on fire.
She was admitted to NRS Medical College and Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The deceased's sister lodged a complaint with the police against her husband and in-laws on the basis of which they were arrested.
Police initiated a probe in this connection and questioned the accused.
The police also spoke to some of the neighbours from and came to know that there used to be trouble in their house often.
There was some trouble on the day the incident had taken place.
Police also recorded statements of the victim's sister and other family members. This is another incident in the recent instances of dowry deaths in the state.
