23-year-old youth dies after bike skids near Uttarpara

Kolkata: A 23-year-old youth was killed when his motorcycle skidded after hitting a person near Uttarpara railway station in Hooghly on Sunday night. The latter, identified as Rohit Kapur, has been injured in the incident.

Police said Rahul Saha (23), a local resident, was returning home when his bike suddenly hit Rohit and skidded. Both the injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where the biker was declared brought dead. The other youth has been undergoing treatment with several injuries in his body.

It was learnt that Saha had severe head injuries as he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Police have started a probe into the incident. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that he was riding the bike at a high speed and could not control the vehicle.

In a separate accident, around 50 persons were injured, some of them critically, when a bus collided head-on with a truck in the Surangapur area under Hemtabad police station in North Dinajpur on Monday morning.

According to the preliminary investigation, the district police suspect that the accident might have taken place due to poor visibility caused by the morning mist. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained. Locals rescued the injured victims and took them to Raigunj Super-specialty Hospital. Among the injured victims there are some school students as well. The frontal portions of both the vehicles were damaged in the accident causing huge traffic congestion for a few minutes. A detailed probe has been initiated.

Two fire incidents across the city triggered tension in Shyampukur and Maidan areas respectively on Monday. No one was hurt in any of the incidents.

Around 5:25 am fire occurred at a residential building on Bose Para Lane under Shyampukur police station jurisdiction. Another fire incident took place around 2:40 pm after a pile of dry leaves inside the Maidan Rugby Ground adjacent to the North Gate of Elliot Park caught fire.
