21-year-old kills self after broken marriage

Kolkata: A 21-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan. The incident triggered tension among the residents at Kumargram village of Katwa in East Burdwan on Friday morning. Locals told the police that she was suffering from depression after a broken marriage.

The victim has been identified as Tanushree Majhi. On Thursday night, she locked herself inside her room and hanged herself from the ceiling fan with the help of a scarf. As she did not open her door on Friday morning, her family members knocked on the door but did not get any reply.

After failing to get any response despite repeated knocks, they alerted local people. Her family members along with the local residents broke open the door to find Tanushree hanging from the ceiling.

Police reached the spot later and recovered the body. They sent the body to Katwa Sub-divisional Hospital for post-mortem.

Her family members told the police that her marriage had been broken in two previous occasions and this had put her under tremendous psychological pressure.

She was suffering from depression since the last incident took place. Her family members were trying to fix her marriage for the past two years. The family members said that they never expected that she could take such a drastic step. Police have started a probe in this regard. They are also investigating whether she had been instigated to commit suicide.
