20 injured in bus accident

As many as 20 persons were injured, some of them critically, after a Durgapur-bound bus from Kolkata lost control and hit a truck from behind on the Durgapur Expressway on Thursday morning.

The local people said that the incident took place at the Somsara village under Dadpur police station at around 9 am. Witnesses said that the bus was running at a high speed when the driver of the SBSTC bus lost control over the vehicle and hit a truck from behind. After hitting the truck, the bus rammed into a iron fencing before falling into a ditch.

After hearing about the incident, the local residents rushed to the spot and rescued the injured passengers. They were taken to a nearby hospital. The bus driver who received severe injuries was immediately taken to the Chinsurah Imambara Hospital in Hooghly. According to the police, some of the passengers received serious injuries in the accident. After being informed, the police reached the spot and recovered the bus from the ditch. The front portion of the bus was badly damaged in the accident. The police suspect that the driver of the bus might have fallen asleep at the time of the accident.

Following the incident, local residents demanded an underpass in the area as they claimed the number of accidents is going up as there was no underpass.

The vehicles run at a top speed leading to road accidents quite often. Police are, however, investigating the real cause of the accident.
