2 women held for stealing diamond-studded gold ring from posh mall

Kolkata: Two women have been arrested for allegedly stealing a diamond-studded gold ring from a jewellery store in South City Mall.

According to the police, on September 22, two women came to the store located on the ground floor of South City Mall.

As soon as they entered the showroom, a salesgirl attended the duo. While choosing ornaments, one of the women kept the salesgirl busy to divert her attention and the other stole a diamond-studded gold ring.

After the duo left the shop, it was found that one diamond-studded gold ring was missing.

Suspecting the women, the shop authority informed the cops.

After a complaint was lodged, the Watch Section of Detective Department (DD) took up the matter. During probe, the police scrutinised the CCTV camera footage of the shop.

Later, the police showed the CCTV camera footage to their sources and instructed them to keep a strict vigil. On Friday, acting on a source information, police arrested the duo, identified as Nobia Bibi of Sonarpur and Mumtaz Begum of Bhangore in South-24 Parganas.

During interrogation, the duo tried to mislead the cops for quite some time but later, they admitted to committing the crime.

Based on the statement of Bibi, police conducted a search operation at her residence and recovered the diamond-studded gold ring which they had stolen from South City. The duo was produced before Alipore Court and has been remanded to police custody till October 17.
