2 killed by speeding ambulance in Nadia

Kolkata: Two persons were killed after being hit by a speeding ambulance. The incident took place at Kathalia area under Karimpur police station in Nadia on Wednesday morning.
The victims have been identified as Dhananjoy Mullick (56) and Ramen Bairagi (26). Police said that the victims were the residents of Kathalia area.
They were having tea standing on the side of a road at Kathalia bazaar on Wednesday morning when a speeding ambulance on its way to Karimpur from Krishnanagar hit them.
The local people said that there was no patient in the ambulance which was running at top speed. The driver of the ambulance lost control of the vehicle and hit the two persons.
After knocking down the two victims, the ambulance hit an electrical pole situated by the side of the road.
The incident triggered tension in the area. The local residents rushed to the spot and rescued the victims who suffered serious injuries and took them to the hospital where they were declared brought dead by the doctors.
After being informed, the police reached the spot and started a probe in this incident.
The driver of the ambulance had, however, fled the spot immediately after the incident.
The local people told the police that the ambulance was passing through the densely populated area at a top speed when the two victims were having tea by the side of the road. The driver lost control over the vehicle and hit the duo.
After the incident the local residents staged demonstration protesting against the over speeding of the vehicles in
the area.
Police pacified the mob and brought the situation under control.
Police are conducting raids to nab the driver who has been at large. Police have seized the vehicle.
This is another incident in the long-standing problem of road mishaps in the state.
Last Sunday, around eight persons were injured, some of them critically, after a head on collision occurred between a car and a motorcycle.
The incident took place on Haldia-Mecheda road early Sunday morning. Police said that three persons were riding on a motorcycle when a car coming from opposite direction hit it. Three riders were identified as Sovanlal Bera (25), Swarup Maiti (20) and Suman Bera (21). All the victims received critical injuries as they were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
The five persons who were travelling in the car were also injured in the incident.
The local residents heard a loud thud and rushed to the spot to find the three bikers lying on the floor with multiple injuries on their bodies. They were rushed to Tomluk district hospital after the accident.
