2 killed after bike hits roadside tree

Kolkata: Two youths were killed when a motorcycle hit a roadside tree in Nadia on Saturday night.

The incident took place at Barbaria village under Dhantala police station. The victims have been identified as Samir Tarafdar (18) and Sohag Mullick (19). The two friends were returning home on a motorcycle when the accident occurred.

An eyewitness told police the bike was running at a high speed when it hit a roadside tree. Both the victims were wearing helmets.

The impact of the incident was so high that the youths fell at a distance after hitting the tree.

The traffic movement in the area got a little slow following the accident. The situation was later brought under control after the intervention of senior police officers in the area.

Some locals rushed the victims to a nearby hospital where the doctors pronounced them brought dead.

After being informed police reached the spot and started a probe.

They recovered the motorcycle that was completely damaged in the incident.

Police are investigating if the victims were inebriated at the time of the accident. They are yet to ascertain the exact cause behind the accident.

The villagers said many often overspeed in the area, especially at night, leading to accidents. They also demanded for adequate surveillance in the area. The district police have sent the bodies for autopsy on Sunday morning.

Cops have informed the family members of the victims after the bodies were identified. They are also investigating if there was any foul play behind the death of the duo.
