After initiating the investigation, police found that a local road contractor hired goons to shoot the villagers dead. However, all the villagers survived the incident though a few received bullet injuries and were taken to a hospital in a critical condition.
The reason of the shootout was an argument between villagers and the men of the road contractor. The villagers alleged that the road contractor used poor quality raw materials while constructing the road. Initially, villagers did not react on his act but some villagers showed the courage to protest against him. The other villagers then joined the villagers to put up a bigger protest. On Sunday, a few aides of the road contractor threatened the villagers when the latter answered them back saying they would go to the district administration to inform about their cheating.
The villagers alleged that the contractor took money from the administration for using good quality raw material. But they used poor quality materials while constructing the road.
On Sunday, some miscreants arrived at the village to shoot several people. They escaped from the spot after the incident leaving the injured villagers lying on the road. The injured people were admitted to Murshidabad Medical College. "The road contractor hired the goons to kill us. But we also attacked them while they started firing at us. We were majority in number, so they escaped from the spot," said a villager. However, police started an investigation on the basis of a complaint lodged by the villagers. Police found that the contractor had a criminal past and a team of investigator is raiding different places to arrest him.
"We will soon arrest the other accused persons involved in this incident," said a police officer.
