2 drug peddlers held with brown sugar

Kolkata: The city police have arrested two drug peddlers and recovered 50 gram of brown sugar worth Rs 50,000 from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Asgar Hossain alias Manu (46) and Arshad Hossain (40). Both are residents of Kolkata. Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Kolkata Police raided Darga Road late on Friday night and arrested the duo.

According to the preliminary investigation, police came to know that the accused used to sell drugs to school and college students. During interrogation, the duo added that they used to sell brown sugar among the students from various schools situated in Park Street and Park Circus areas as well. A case has been started at Beniapukur police station in this regard. The investigating officers are trying to collect details of those students who have been given the drugs so that counselling can happen.

Police had specific information that the accused might be visiting Park Circus areas late on Friday night. The cops, in plainclothes, found the duo moving aimlessly on Darga Road and caught them. During a search, they found brown sugar in their possession, eventually leading to their arrest.

Some students from renowned schools in the city have bought drugs from them, the preliminary investigation revealed. Police are trying to learn the names of other gang members who might be involved in the incident. Police are investigating if the accused are a part of any inter-state drug peddling racket. A detailed probe has been initiated. On earlier occasions, many drug peddlers have been arrested from the city, allegedly for supplying drugs to students.
