2 dead after car hits bike on Burdwan-Katwa Road

Two persons were killed when the motorcycle they were riding on was hit by a car near Bhumshore area of Bhatar in Burdwan on Thursday morning.

Police said that Tapas Samanta (42) and Sufal Majhi (36), residents of Vairabpur village in Burdwan, started off for Bhatar from their houses on Thursday morning on a motorcycle. When the victims were riding their motorcycle along the Burdwan-Katwa Road, they were hit by a private car coming from the opposite direction. The intensity of the accident was so high that the motorcycle fell on a nearby ditch immediately after the accident.

After hearing about the incident, local people rushed to the spot and rescued the two bikers. They rushed the victims to a nearby hospital where both the persons were declared brought dead by the doctors.

Local people said that the private car was running at a high speed on its way to Katwa. The driver suddenly lost control over the vehicle and hit the motorbike. The local people said that the two bikers were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident. The driver of the car jumped off the car which eventually overturned on the road after hitting the motorcycle and fled from the spot before the local residents reached. Police suspect that the driver could not control the vehicle while taking a sharp bend on the road.

The incident triggered tension in the area on Thursday morning. Local people alleged that the vehicles often run at a high speed through the area which often cause accidents. Despite repeated pleas, the local administration has failed to check the accidents, alleged the locals. Police came to know in the investigation that the driver was alone in the car at the time of the accident and are conducting raids to nab the accused driver.
