2 cops injured in clash with locals at Sovabazar

Kolkata: Two police personnel were injured in a clash that broke out between the police and locals following a road accident in which a biker was killed.
The incident took place on Sovabazar Street on late Sunday night.
Police have arrested six persons for creating violence and attacking on duty policemen. According to police, one Sanjoy Saha was going to Sova bazar More from Sovabazar ghat on his motorcycle when a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction hit him.
The victim died on spot due to the intensity of the accident. The motorcycle Saha was riding was completely damaged in the accident.
The truck driver fled the spot immediately after the incident leaving the vehicle at the spot.
According to police, victim was a local resident. Following the incident, locals became infuriated and ransacked the truck. They also damaged some other trucks parked on the either side of the roads.
A heated altercation broke out between the locals and the police who later rushed to the spot after the accident. An irate mob roughed up some policemen who tried to dissuade them from carrying out the rampage. Two policemen have been injured in the incident and they are undergoing treatment in a hospital.
Police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the mob.
People pelted stones on the policemen and also hurled glass pieces at them who were trying to pacify the mob.
A huge contingent of police reached the spot to bring the situation under control. Police brought the situation under control after two hours.
Locals have alleged that vehicles that are parked by the side of the road often leads to road accidents in the area.
Police have failed to take any steps against the vehicles which remain parked along the road, they alleged. The matter was informed to the local police station but no steps have been taken so far. Police are conducting raids to nab the driver who has been at large since the accident took place.
