18-year-old found hanging inside Metiabruz police station

Kolkata: Mystery shrouds the death of a young boy whose body was found hanging from the ceiling fan inside Metiabruz police station while being in police custody.

Akibul Islam (18), who was arrested by the police on suspicion of a jewellery thief, was found hanging from the ceiling inside police lock up on Wednesday morning. According to the preliminary investigation, police said that Akibul committed suicide.

Police have started a case of unnatural death. According to the police, the boy had hanged himself with the help of his shoe lace and belt. The police personnels on Wednesday morning found him hanging inside the lock up. They recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.

The cops had arrested him from Metiabruz police station area on suspicion of being a thief. He was interrogated by the police and then taken to a room situated on the first floor of the station. He was kept inside the room on Tuesday night. Later at night, when a police personnel went to the room, he found that Akibul was hanging from the ceiling fan. A senior police officer has ordered a probe in this regard. Action will be taken against police personnels if any negligence is found on their part, said a senior police officer.

In a similar incident, one Sudrashan Sarkar (29) who was arrested in connection with a theft at Talbandi area of New Barrackpore police station area committed suicide inside the police lock up on Tuesday night. The locals had caught the accused and later handed him over to the police. Cops said that the accused committed suicide inside the lock up with the help of a piece of cloth. He was declared brought dead after being taken to the hospital.

Senior police officers of Bidhannagar police commissonarate ordered a probe to find if there was any negligence. They are investigating as to how the incident went unnoticed.
