1.64 kg of objects found in abdomen of woman

Kolkata: In a bizarre incident, doctors at the Rampurhat Superspecialty Hospital in Birbhum have removed ornaments and other items weighing around 1.64 kg from the abdomen of a 26-year-old mentally challenged woman.

The patient, identified as Runi Khatun, complained of severe abdominal pain and vomiting in the past few days. The matter was brought to the notice of her family members, who in turn consulted a local doctor. The family members were subsequently asked to take the patient to a nearby hospital.

Khatun, a resident of Kanaipur village in Birbhum, was rushed to the Rampurhat Superspecialty Hospital seven days ago and admitted to the emergency department.

After carrying out various clinical tests on the patient, the doctors found that various ornaments were there inside her abdomen. A team comprising of five doctors was formed by the hospital authorities to tackle the situation.

The team of doctors carried out surgery for more than an hour and removed a gold bangle, earrings, chains, 60 coins and a wrist watch from her abdomen, which together weighed around 1.64 kg.

The family members of the victim told the doctors that

she developed mental imbalance a few years ago. The doctors are suspecting that the patient had been swallowing these items for a long time. They are curious as to how the matter went unnoticed by the family members.
