16 arrested for duping elderly woman

Kolkata: The Cyber Crime police station of Bidhannagar Commissionerate on Tuesday arrested 16 persons for duping an elderly lady with the promise of refunding her dormant insurance policies. Three of the arrested persons are women.

The arrests were made on the basis of a complaint lodged by the 73-year-old woman, a resident of Girish Park, in June.

As per her complaint, she received phone calls in March 2018 where the caller asked her if she was facing any problem relating to dormant insurance. The complainant had such policies and so representatives from the company visited her house and later as per the caller's instruction she came to the office of the company located at Matrix Tower at DN- 24, Salt Lake, Sector-V, on more than one occasion. She was duped in the name of refunding her dormant insurance policies and step-by-step was made to pay Rs 40 lakh for new insurance policies in the name of her physically-challenged son. Among those arrested, three are directors of the company namely Rajesh Kumar Shaw of Belghoria, Debasish Debnath of Ranaghat, Nadia and Krishanu Rishi Das of Duttapukur, North 24-Parganas. The sleuths have seized several documents in the form of ATM cards in the name of many people, computer system and mobile phones. "Our investigation has revealed that many other persons have been cheated by this racket," an investigating officer said.
