15 houses of TMC workers torched, many damaged at Cooch Behar

Kolkata: Around 15 houses of Trinamool Congress workers were set on fire and many others were damaged following a clash in Balasi area near Dewanhat Village at Cooch Behar I block.

The incident took place on Saturday morning. Police are maintaining vigil in the area to ensure that law and order situation doesn't deteriorate further.

Sources said the trouble broke following indifferences on formation of board of Gram Panchayat.

Police came to know after the preliminary investigation that a Trinamool Congress worker Tapas Kumar Dey was attacked on Friday morning. Again on Saturday, there was a clash in which Trinamool Congress workers were beaten up. Their houses were also damaged and 15 houses were set on fire. Another party worker, Noor Nabi, was also attacked.

His motorbike was also set on fire. There was a road block that led to massive traffic congestion in the area.

A large contingent of police led by senior police officers in the district went to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Police were posted at the village to maintain law and order in the area.

The police initiated a probe in this connection.
