14-yr-old undergoes plastic surgery on a chair

Kolkata: A surgery was performed on a 14-year-old girl while she was made to sit on a chair. The incident occurred at SSKM Hospital, the only state-run superspecialty hospital in the city.
The SSKM authorities have ordered a probe into the incident. The patient needed a plastic surgery on her face. As the operation theatre was unavailable, doctors had to operate while the patient was made to sit on a chair.
The doctors said the patient was unable to endure the pain and required immediate surgery. The operation was performed for nearly two hours. Many have questioned the risk that the doctors took.
The victim, a resident of Bankura, was molested and beaten up by local youth when she suffered injuries to her head, teeth and on the face. The family took her to Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital where the doctors found that a bone had fractured on her face.
On November 10, the girl was shifted to SSKM Hospital.
After clinical tests, doctors at the SSKM decided to operate on her face. On Wednesday, she was shifted to the plastic surgery department for surgery. As the plastic surgery department OT was occupied, the patient was made to wait.
After seeing her in excruciating pain, her family requested the doctors to operate upon her immediately. Surgery was performed making her sit on a chair. The doctors claimed that the operation was successful and the patient was recovering.
Some have raised questions about those who should be held accountable if the patient collapsed during surgery. Following the incident, the hospital authorities have asked the departmental head to submit a detailed report in this regard.
