13 acquitted in Girish Park firing case

Kolkata: Thirteen persons, including the prime accused in Girish Park firing case, which took place in April 2018, were acquitted on Thursday by the Bankshall Court.

Police have failed to submit provide evidences which can prove the accused persons guilty. On April 18, 2015, during the KMC election, a clash took place between two groups at Rajendra Mullick Street in Girish Park after almost an hour of voting closed. To stop the clash, police force from Girish Park police station went to the spot. While trying to stop the clash, an unknown miscreant fired a round which hit then Sub Inspector of Girish Park police station identified as Jagannath Mondal. The bullet had hit Mondal's shoulder. At present, he is being posted as the Additional Officer-in-Charge of Kasba police station after he was promoted to the rank of Inspector few years ago.

Thirteen persons, including the prime accused identified as Gopal Tiwari, were arrested. All of them were booked on charges of attempt to murder and other

non-bailable offences.

Earlier, Tiwari appealed before the Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court for bail. Though he was not granted bail, Supreme Court instructed the lower court to complete the trial by September 30. Apart from the 13 persons acquitted on Thursday, six more accused persons were shown as absconding.
